COMPANY SYNOPSIS:
For almost 100 years, Kewpee Hamburger has been serving fresh ground hamburgers with high quality fixings, fresh baked pie, frosted malts, and much more to many happy customers across the mid-west. The first Kewpee restaurant opened in 1923 in Flint, Michigan. Burger Beast notes that “Kewpee Hamburgers is the 2nd oldest Burger Chain in the United States after White Castle.” According to the Cleveland.com website, “during the 1940s, there were more than 400 Kewpee locations nationwide.” Today, Kewpee Hamburgers has locations in Lima, Ohio, including the downtown, westside, and eastside locations, and two out of state locations (Lansing, Michigan & Racine, Wisconsin). In addition, Kewpee has been recognized for having one of the first drive-thrus in the country. It is rumored, in the industry, that Wendy’s copied the square burgers made famous at Kewpee!

HOW DID KEWPEE BURGERS FIND ITSENCLOSURES:
Scott Shutt, Kewpee Hamburgers owner/operator, found the ITSENCLOSURES website while performing an online Google search for drive thru digital signage. He was interested in a menu board for the drive-thrus at his three Lima locations. Once he found the solution that would work for his needs, he called ITSENCLOSURES and talked to a salesperson about his options.

Mr. Shutt was in pursuit of an all-weather, outdoor digital menu board to be installed at Kewpee Hamburgers in Lima, Ohio. He researched various digital signs and monitor solutions available on the market. His main goal was to determine what competitors were utilizing at fast food/quick service restaurants in the United States. The most important function of the digital signage would be displaying the restaurant’s menu for Kewpee’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert selections. Mr. Shutt wanted the ability to change out advertising on the screens, as well as update pricing and promote best-selling food items and seasonal items, like holiday pies.

CHALLENGES:
The current static signage would need to be removed, new heavy-duty bolts installed in existing concrete, and updated wiring would have to be fed into the building under the ground. Also, the digital signage would be deployed in a tight area in the existing drive-thru lane.  Mr. Shutt was concerned about drivers being able to maneuver around the drive-thru without hitting the sign. He also wanted to make sure that the sign was bright enough in direct sunlight. In addition, two of his locations would need special mounting, as the signs were in close proximity to brick walls.

SOLUTION:
Kewpee Hamburgers reviewed a few different solutions over the course of a few months and, after visiting ITSENCLOSURES in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, chose the VS-6 2×1 digital menu board with two high bright Samsung outdoor monitors. Kewpee and ITSENCLOSURES mounted the all-weather menu board in the drive-thru of the downtown Lima Kewpee HamburgersThe innovative solution includes two 55-inch, 2,500 nit high-bright LCD monitors (in portrait orientation) encased in a mount/pole configuration with housing for media players and other necessary electronics. The signage encasement is marine grade aluminum with a polyester powder paint finish and stainless steel fasteners. For the locations with limited space, ITSENCLOSURES designed a custom ‘swinging arm’ mount for the menu boards installed near brick walls. This built-to-last structure would make it easier to access the monitors, while keeping air circulation intact.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT:
Scott Shutt, Kewpee Hamburgers owner/operator, summed up the digital sign project, “Like much technology today, there are considerations to be made with hardware and software. Many vendors have a background in software and it becomes apparent that they are more interested in selling software licenses than how the menu board will perform. The engineering of the ITS VS-6 2×1 is superb and the quality of the fabrication is unsurpassed. The Dairy Queen in Mt. Pleasant, Pa wanted to install outdoor digital signage to test the impact on sales.

COMPANY SYNOPSIS:
Who doesn’t love a creamy, delicious DQ Blizzard Treat? According to DairyQueen.com, the first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois in 1940. Today, “International Dairy Queen Inc., (IDQ) develops, licenses and services a system of more than 6,800 locations in the United States, Canada and more than 25 other countries. The Dairy Queen system offers a variety of treats and products including burgers, chicken strips, artisan sandwiches and the famous DQ soft-serve.”

HOW DID DAIRY QUEEN FIND ITSENCLOSURES:
Judy Lynn-Craig, the President and Owner of Lynn Dairy Queens, Inc. and Dairy Queen of S.W. Pennsylvania (PA), Inc., and Joe Cooper, Creative Marketing Director for Lynn Dairy Queens, Inc., found the ITSENCLOSURES website while searching for outdoor digital menu boards on Google. The team was interested in outdoor digital marketing for DQ locations owned by Lynn Dairy Queens, Inc. Locations include Brownsville, Centerville, Connellsville, Uniontown, and Mount Pleasant. The ‘Lynn Dairy Queens’ collective has been in operation for over 65 years.

Judy and Joe wished to install a pre-sell outdoor digital signage board at a drive-thru to test the impact to sales and product mix in comparison to a static pre-sell board, which the locations have had in place for many years.

“We are looking at possibly installing either a digital pre-sell board or a full outdoor digital signage solution. Five stores have breakfast, so it’s getting hard to fit everything on the boards without taking up the parking lot,” said Joe.  In addition, they also wanted the ability to change marketing messages and promotions on outdoor screens, especially the pre-sell board. The Mount Pleasant, PA location would be the first DQ restaurant in Southwestern PA with an all-weather, digital board. The main drive-thru menu board was also considered.

CHALLENGES:
Lynn Dairy Queens would have to remove the existing static signage and fresh heavy-duty bolts would need to be installed in the concrete. The customer also desired that the outdoor digital signage be bright enough to be seen in direct sunlight throughout the day. Furthermore, the installation of a one screen or two screen solution or both needed to be reviewed and discussed during the early stages.

SOLUTION:
After much consideration and a few in-person meet & greets to see what ITSENCLOSURES had to offer, Lynn Dairy Queens chose the VS-6 1×1 digital pre-sell board to replace their pre-existing static promotional sign. The robust solution includes a Samsung 55-inch (OH55F), 2,500 nit high-bright LCD monitor (in portrait orientation) encased in a mount/pole configuration with a rear all-weather enclosure for a media player and other necessary electronics. The signage encasement is marine grade aluminum with a polyester powder paint finish.

Promotions and LTOs (limited time offers) can be altered and updated throughout the day and/or scheduled for different dayparts. Joe created the digital content based off of promotional content provided by Dairy Queen.

Originally, the main menu was intended to be digital, but after further review, it was decided that the restaurant had far too many menu items to fit on two screens and the 2nd phase of the project was put on the back burner.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT:
Judy Lynn-Craig was impressed with the quality of the digital screen and was pleased with the installation, stating, “You were very cooperative in making this happen. We will continue to work with [the digital signage] to see how we can use it to boost our sales. Also, we will gather data and site photos to share with the team at American Dairy Queen, who is investigating a full outdoor digital signage solution to possibly offer to DQ restaurants across the U.S. system.”

When planning an outdoor digital signage project, how important is a site survey?

Many digital signage installations are retrofits of existing sites and most Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs)/fast food stores will require prep work to install an outdoor digital menu board or digital presell board. When preparing for your project, a site survey is extremely vital and will eliminate any unnecessary guesswork. There are a number of items to consider during the site survey to ensure a smooth transition from static to vibrant digital menu boards.

    • Cable Run:
      Determine what cabling is required for running the digital signage content  – CAT5 vs. Rapid Run. It is important to understand who will be providing the cabling at the site. During the site survey, the installer will be able to provide an estimate as to how much cabling will be necessary. A wireless antenna or mobile data may also be an option.
    • Power Sources:
      Most existing static menu boards only require 1 outlet. Outdoor digital menu boards will require additional dedicated power outlets (voltage and amperage depends on enclosure solution). Determine who will be responsible for running the additional outlet(s) to the site.
    • Footer & Pad:
      Evaluate the existing concrete pad and footer pattern. Determine if the existing footer and pad are acceptable or if additional work will need to be completed. Detailed footer specifications are most likely available on an digital signage data sheet.
    • Identify Equipment On Site:
      Identify who is responsible for removing the static menu board. If the installer is responsible, make sure the right equipment is available on the day of the install. What equipment is necessary for installing the outdoor digital signage?

It is helpful to have all the items (listed above) lined up prior to the digital signage installation day. The right cabling and power run to the menu board pad, in advance, will allow for an easier installation! However, it is possible to complete the items above during the menu board install. Just remember to factor in these items when estimating how long the installation will take during the day and/or overnight.

The majority of Quick Service Restaurants will request that the digital signage installation occur during off hours (usually through the overnight). Proper planning will help the installation go smoothly and quickly to ensure your drive-thru is up and running with the sleek, cool digital menus before the breakfast coffee rush.

Chefette, a quick service restaurant chain based in Barbados, was in search of digital signage menu boards and found ITSENCLOSURES.

COMPANY SYNOPSIS:
Founded in 1972, Chefette is the largest quick service restaurant chain based on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The company currently has 14 locations and is known for its broasted chicken and specialty wraps (known as the “roti roll”). Chefette offers a large variety of food, including lamb chops, wings, onion rings, burgers, salads, pie, and ice cream. According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, Chefette is one of the best fast food restaurant chains in the world.

HOW DID CHEFETTE FIND ITSENCLOSURES:
Chefette met ITSENCLOSURES at the National Restaurant Association trade show in Chicago, Illinois. The restaurant was interested in outdoor digital menu boards for its drive-thru’s. The overall goal of the digital signage project was to remain hip/modern and greatly enhance the image of the brand. Digital menu boards would help to reinforce Chefette’s already stellar reputation across the island.

Chefette desired to make the switch to digital menu boards both inside the restaurant and outside in the drive-thru lane. ITSENCLOSURES is one of the top providers of outdoor digital signage in the United States. Chefette also desired to utilize digital menus on the inside of each of the chain’s locations.

CHALLENGES:
Because of the salty island air, heat, humidity, and bright sunlight present throughout the year, Chefette required a heavy-duty, outdoor, digital signage solution. Chefette also realized that thermal management would be an important piece of the digital signage menu solution.

SOLUTION:
Looking for a trusted partner, Chefette turned to ITSENCLOSURES because of the company’s experience with outdoor digital signage in the quick service industry. In addition, ITSENCLOSURES had established partners to easily source the required electronics and mounts. Chefette was able to procure all of the necessary hardware from one company. Dayparting is now something that can be done with very little effort. When it comes to digital signage and customer engagement, Chefette immediately noticed a positive impact. With the addition of digital menu boards, the restaurants created a face lift, without breaking the bank on a complete renovation. Because the menu boards were easier to read and understand, ordering time was also cut down considerably compared to the static menu boards. The eye-catching screens garnered attention and improved the overall experience of the Chefette brand! Penn State University desired digital signage for fan attending football games at Beaver Stadium.

PENN STATE UNIVERSITY SYNOPSIS:
Penn State University, home of Beaver Stadium and PSU Football, is located in University Park, Pennsylvania. Beaver Stadium is one of the largest football venues in the nation, with a seating capacity of over 106,000.

HOW DID PENN STATE FIND ITSENCLOSURES:
An audio video integrator for Penn State University was tasked with finding reputable digital signage manufacturers. The integrator located ITSENCLOSURES through a web search and requested additional information on the possibility of a custom digital signage solution. After initial contact, ITSENCLOSURES was invited to tour Beaver Stadium, perform a site visit, and meet with key contacts for the project.

Penn State University made the decision to upgrade Beaver Stadium’s north end zone with LCD enclosures. In certain rows, the cantilevered end zone does not allow for spectators to see the scoreboard. To keep die-hard fans in the game, the University desired to use LCDs to ensure that no plays were missed in the stands.

CHALLENGES:
The digital signage solution would need to be suspended from the upper deck, which poses a major safety hazard. Penn State was concerned with the vibration caused by thousands of fans. Heavy-duty mounts – with safety chains – were necessary to protect spectators when the stadium erupts with excitement during game day.

SOLUTION:
Penn State chose to install ITSENCLOSURES’ ViewStation Universal environmental digital signage. A custom mount suspended two enclosures, side by side. Each enclosure holds a 32-inch LCD. Since there is no exposure to direct sunlight, filtered fans with supplemental heaters were installed to regulate the temperatures.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT:
Penn State purchased a total of 22 LCD enclosures and 11 custom mounts. The enclosures display live playbacks and keep fans updated on all of the action during the game. The LCD enclosures and mounts are finished in Penn State blue to match the University’s colors. Each enclosure is built to withstand the early season heat, as well as harsh winters in Pennsylvania.

 – As ITSENCLOSURES continues to fabricate and deploy digital signage throughout the United States and abroad, a returning customer, Chefette Restaurants, recently added more outdoor digital signage menu to its chain of quick service restaurants.

Originally founded in 1972, Chefette Restaurants, the largest quick service restaurant in the Caribbean island nation of Barbados, operates 15 locations across the island of Barbados and employs over 850 people. Chefette deployed its first round of digital signage in the first quarter of 2013 at 10 drive-thru locations. The deployment included indoor and outdoor digital signage in portrait orientation and consisted of a mix of triple screen outdoor menu boards and single display pre-sale digital boards, both with 46-inch high-bright monitors. Because of the heat (average temperature is 80° F) and humidity that exists on the island, the outdoor LCD enclosures required air-conditioners installed on the rear of each unit.

The grand opening of Chefette’s brand-new location in Lancaster was September 15th, 2017. The company’s website noted “Chefette’s newest branch is located in Lancaster, St. James, just off Highway 2A. This beautiful facility expands upon the modern designs seen at our Warrens and Welches branches and features a drive-thru, Double MEGA 3-Story Playground and ice cream parlor.” According to the news article, ‘Barbados needs Chefette now more than ever,’ the new location “sits on over 8,000 square feet of land, can seat about 170 people and offers parking space for about 40 vehicles.”

Utilizing the latest technology, ITSENCLOSURES’ fan cooled digital menu boards boast a 66% energy consumption reduction, compared to the compressor based enclosures originally installed in 2013.  Each enclosure is branded with the company’s logo and powder coated in the company’s signature color purple. Since the original deployment in 2013, ITSENCLOSURES’ new generation of outdoor digital menu boards are thinner, sleeker, and more energy efficient. To reduce  frequent enclosure maintenance, the menu boards employ a hydrophobic air filter to keep out dust and dirt, and only need to be replaced every 3-5 years. Chefette also installed commercial grade 48-inch monitors indoors to serve as menu boards and promotional tools.

Backyard Taco, located in Gilbert, Arizona, is the latest quick service restaurant to install ITSENCLOSURES’ innovative ViewStation QSR three screen digital menu board. According to the Backyard Taco website, the family owned restaurant strives to make the most delicious tacos with the best ingredients, “Our recipe for success is always fresh ingredients and our mesquite grill. It’s a combo that gives us the authentic taste of Tacos al Carbon. We keep our menu simple, because we only offer what we do best.”

backyard taco itsenclosures digital signage drive thru viewstationOpening a new location and wanting it to be state-of-the-art, Backyard Taco contacted ITSENCLOSURES about installing a dynamic, digital signage menu board in the drive-thru. The outdoor digital menu board incorporates three high bright LCDs (2,000 nit) in portrait orientation. Already utilizing digital menu boards on the inside of the restaurant and in portrait orientation too, Backyard Taco was able to use the same menu content on the outside, thus saving time and money for the restaurant.

ITSENCLOSURES solution utilized three 47” monitors and a 6,000 BTU air conditioner to combat the hot, desert weather found in Arizona for most of the calendar year, especially during the Summer months. To provide a water tight seal, the digital signage body (powder coated light brown) is marine grade aluminum and welded aluminum. The large viewing window is laminated glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides, providing 99% light transmission and UV protection. In addition, the front cover is hinged at the top and supported by gas springs for front access to all three displays. A rear door provides access to internal electronics, as well as, power and data entry locations. Specific, heavy-duty gasket is installed around the glass to keep the cool air inside of the digital signage and prevent the enclosure glass from fogging up.

President and Owner of ITSENCLOSURES, JT Spangler, knew that his company was prepared for the Arizona heat, “We installed a number of outdoor digital signage menu boards at another popular quick service restaurant in Arizona during 2011. We are aware of the challenges you need to overcome to combat against the high temperatures and strong sunlight exposure for an outdoor digital menu solution.  Our production team ensured the enclosure configuration will withstand any environment.”

Royal Sign Company, located in Phoenix, Arizona, was hired by Backyard Taco to install the digital signage boards in the drive-thru. ITSENCLOSURES supplied the sign company with directions on how to install the 3×1, including the size of the footer, location of anchor bolts, and running the electric and the Cat 5 cables properly.

Mt. Pleasant, PA (February 28, 2017) – ITSENCLOSURES, a digital signage hardware expert, installed an all-weather, LCD enclosure at the front entrance of The Frank Kapr Funeral Home. The digital signage displays brief obituaries with visiting hours and also announcements/events.

Frank Kapr Funeral Home, located on West Pittsburgh Street in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, has been in operation for over 6 decades. Wanting to take advantage of the flexibility of digital signage to instantly change and revise content, the funeral home installed a consumer grade, residential, HDTV to present obituaries and announcements. The indoor monitor was mounted outdoors on the front porch railing, but was not a ‘high bright,’ commercial monitor. For this reason, it was nearly impossible to see during the day.

After struggling to use the current system, the funeral home turned to ITSENCLOSURES for direction on a more robust solution. For over a decade, ITSENCLOSURES has designed and installed outdoor, all-weather lcd enclosures across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Several factors were considered, including the overall display visibility and harsh, Western Pennsylvania weather conditions.

After meeting with ITSENCLOSURES to discuss digital signage options, Frank Kapr chose an enclosure – in portrait orientation – that included a 46” high bright LCD (1,500 nits), and a specific heating and cooling system to allow operation 24/7 in temperatures of -40° to 120°F. To quickly modify content on an hourly or daily basis, a media player is hard-wired to a computer in the funeral home’s main office.

Frank Kapr, Owner of The Frank Kapr Funeral Home, was pleased with his decision to utilize digital signage at his funeral home, “We wanted state-of-the-art signage for our funeral home… something that could be seen from a distance. Our first step was to contact Shannon Roberts, who is the Production Manager at ITSENCLOSURES. He took the time to explain everything clearly to us and helped us make the best decision for our needs.”

After reviewing various locations on the funeral home’s grounds, the enclosure was installed on a cement footer in the flower garden at front of the building and can be seen by those walking or driving past the building. It is surrounded by flowers and greenery, making it an eye-catching addition to the funeral home. Frank Kapr also chose to have the funeral home’s logo silk screened in 3 locations on the enclosure for personal customization and brand awareness.

The Frank Kapr Funeral Home has a park on the property, called the Family Gardens, with a soothing waterfall, fountain, and statue. The all-weather LCD enclosure announces musical entertainment in the park. Singers, instrumentalists, and bands are provided free of charge to the public.

Mr. Kapr continued, “We are ecstatic about all that our attractive sign is capable of doing and we are continually finding new things to try with the sign. It is the right size for the exterior of the funeral home and the messages can be read from a distance. We are happy with our investment and every dollar was well spent.
